Due to the limited availability of the trailer, the horse was prepared in haste, but nevertheless the usual professional finish was achieved.

An early start was made at Lower Leigh. unfortunately the horse having had a hard day needed to stop for refreshment at The London Inn. Due to the convivial atmosphere we were late arriving at seaside to pick up Uncle Tom (Gerald Walters) and arrived at the carnival 5 minutes late.

For the first time in carnival history Uncle Tom found itself near the front of the procession. This prevented the horse from taking on any further nourishment after its arduous journey, much to the disappointment of the tail end riders. The procession commenced, unfortunately without the lead walker, Philip Sanders, this was due to a little internal plumbing difficulties.

The procession and the reception were a great success with much adulation from the spectators.

At termination of the carnival, in accordance with the local tradition, the horse rested at The Collingwood where once again Michael Challicombe, the proprietor, laid on an excellent game pie as well as other refreshments.

The horse, having been replenished, set off for The Old Globe, Berrynarbour, where further liquid refreshments were made available and enjoyed by all concerned.

Ilfracombe carnival marked the end of the 2000 season, the riders can now rest leaving the horse to be comfortably stabled for the winter.
